The Capitol School took third place (out of six competing schools) in the West Alabama Regional Mathcounts Team Competition this past Saturday, which took place at the mathematics department at the University of Alabama. Mathcounts is a nationwide mathematics competition for middle school students that includes individual and team events. The Team Round consisted of 10 tough math problems that students work together to solve in 20 minutes. Our team consisted of Mogen McKnight, Ollie Altman, Kingston Hall, and Hemming Redborg, all in 8th grade. This was their last year to be able to participate in Mathcounts, but I hope they will continue to enjoy math throughout their high school years and be interested in more competitions.

This Montessori work is called the 100 board. A preschool student organized and placed 100 tiles in order and then wrote each number. This work takes several days to complete and results in a sense of great pride by the student.
