The
Preschool Program
The
Elementary Program Rather than reading a chapter in a textbook and filling in blanks, children engage in extensive learning projects. These projects involve higher order thinking skills and mirror real-life problems and situations. Purposeful learning that includes hands-on involvement has proven to be much more effective than the traditional approach. Children
are grouped in multi-age clusters to mirror real-life environments such as
home and work. Such grouping has proven to result in enhanced learning, as
peers become involved in tutoring one another. Unlike traditional age-based
classrooms, clusters allow students to work above grade level.
Our world is very complex and requires skills and knowledge far beyond what can be obtained from reading a book and answering test questions. Teachers develop units in a manner geared towards a balance with standardized tests. Middle schoolers and high schoolers at The Capitol School are gaining a head start by getting the experience, confidence, and skills they need to succeed around the world. Middle and high school students receive individualized help, tutorial sessions on Fridays, advisory group sessions, one-on-one parent teacher meetings each semester, create and broadcast public radio shows, conduct in-depth stock market studies, participate in significant community service projects, and are involved with advanced club sessions such as Spanish, guitar, yearbook, radio club, and art club. These are a few of the meaningful learning experiences enjoyed by The Capitol School’s middle and high school students. Teachers:
