Science News

We have learned many great things about plants during our study of them.  Students dissected seeds and flowers to determine the parts of each, learned about the different kinds of trees, and studied the variations in leaves.  Through the internet, video, books, and real life explorations we have examined much about plant life.  Mr. Wayne Ford from the County Extension office will be coming to take us on a walk around the park, during which he points out various things about trees and plants.

Did you notice the GIGANTIC tree cross-section on the park close to our dumpster?  Mrs. Spencer saw the big oak being cut down from the cemetery a few streets over.  Knowing that some of the graves there date back to Civil War times, she asked the men cutting down the tree if we could have a cross-section to study.

They consented and even delivered it to the park.  We are going to study it and count the rings to see if it dates anywhere as old as the graves since it was in the center of the cemetery.  We even thought about putting up a plaque commemorating where the tree stood and how old it is for people who visit the park to see.

 Last Chance for Class T-Shirts

Mrs. Spencer will be placing our t-shirt order for the fall after Friday.  If you have not seen her to talk about a shirt for your child, please do so if interested in ordering one.

Money at School

We have had a bit of a problem with students bringing money to school.  We keep a pretty strict policy about only buying a canned soda to go with pizza on Friday, so please don’t allow your child to bring money any other day.  There isn’t any reason to have money during our school day and we feel bad when something happens to their money.

Mathematics

In math, we are continuing to look at number concepts.  We began with place value, then moved on to such topics as comparing and ordering numbers, odd and even, and now have begun addition work.

Reading

The new computers have been such a blessing to our cluster.  We are using them daily in many subjects.  However, with this new technology we have experienced difficulties transferring our Accelerated Reading materials.  Therefore, we have not been able to take ANY accelerated reading tests for about 2 weeks!  Mrs. Spencer is just as upset as the students about this but is at the mercy of the technology.  As SOON as the problem is rectified, students will immediately be able to resume comprehension tests on their books.  In the meantime . . Reading goes on!!!

Workplan

Students have really risen to the challenge of workplans this year.  Each Monday, Mrs. Spencer and Mrs. Hardin go over the different “centers” and activities that are to be completed for the work plan to be complete.  It is amazing to see everyone busy at work doing so many different things but all working productively.

Field Trip to Zoo/Botanical Gardens

We are planning a field trip to correlate to our study on animals.  The date is not set yet, but more than likely it will be during the month of October.  As soon as we know the date, we will pass it on so that we can procure drivers.
